Snickerdoodles

The Snickerdoodle might just be my forever‑favorite cookie. If it has cinnamon in it, I’m already halfway in love — and these hit every cozy cinnamon note perfectly. I started baking them when I was about eight, standing on a chair in the kitchen and feeling very official with my little bowl of cinnamon sugar. In my big blue book of family recipes, the Snickerdoodle card practically jumped out at me while I was hunting for something to take to book club. It’s splattered with cinnamon stains and smudges from years of use, but the recipe is still exactly the taste I remember — soft, sweet, and full of childhood magic.

🍪 Classic Soft & Chewy Snickerdoodles

Prep Time: 15 mins | Chill Time: 10 mins (optional) | Bake Time: 8–10 mins | Servings: 24–30 cookies

🛒 INGREDIENTSFor the Cookie Dough:

1 cup butter, softened

1 ½ cups sugar

2 large eggs

2 tsp vanilla extract

3 cups flour, sifted

2 tsp cream of tartar

1 tsp baking soda

¼ tsp salt

For the Cinnamon-Sugar Topping:

⅓ cup sugar

2 tbsp ground cinnamon

👩‍🍳 DIRECTIONS

  1. Prep the Oven: Pre-heat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Cream the Wet Ingredients: In a stand mixer, combine the softened butter, 1 ½ cups sugar, vanilla, and eggs. Mix until light, fluffy, and creamy.

  3. Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.

  4. Combine: With the mixer running on low speed, gently spoon the sifted flour mixture into the butter mixture until fully combined. The dough should feel firm enough to easily roll into balls.

  5. Roll in Cinnamon-Sugar: In a small bowl, whisk together ⅓ cup sugar and 2 tbsp cinnamon for the topping. Scoop dough and roll into smooth balls, then generously coat each ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

  6. Chill (Pro-Tip!): Place the dough balls onto your cookie sheet and pop the entire tray into the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to chill before baking. (This step is optional, but it helps prevent spreading and creates a wonderfully fluffy cookie!)

  7. Bake & Cool: Bake at 400°F for 8 to 10 minutes (depending on your oven). Transfer to a wire cooling rack for a few minutes to set before enjoying! ✨
