Sloppy Joe's
🍔 When Frozen Patties Turn into Sloppy Joe Magic (idea credit: my husband, Anthony)
You know how dinner plans sound simple… until they aren’t? Well, this one is all Anthony.
He stopped by our local butcher shop — proud as can be — and came home with a pack of frozen hamburger patties. The plan: classic burgers for dinner. Easy. Straightforward. No drama.
Except… the patties were frozen solid. Like mountain‑ice frozen. Like “did these come from the Arctic?” frozen.
We tried all the usual tricks — the cold-water bath, the countertop patience test, a little gentle persuasion — nothing. When we finally managed to pry one patty loose, it started crumbling like it had given up on its own identity.
That’s when Anthony, in true Two Beans and a Pea fashion, looked at me and said:
“Can you just make Sloppy Joe’s instead?”
And honestly… that was the best idea of the night.
So that’s exactly what we did — took those stubborn frozen patties and turned them into cozy, saucy, unexpected Sloppy Joe goodness. A dinner rescue, courtesy of my husband’s quick thinking and a little kitchen improvisation.

Brown the Beef: Add ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.

Mellow the Tomato Paste: Stir in the tomato paste first. Cook for 1–2 minutes to deepen the flavor and remove raw acidity.

Simmer: Pour in water or broth and bring to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes to let the flavors meld.
