My grandmother on my mom’s side passed away when I was under the age of two, so I never had the chance to know her. From her side of the family, we have Italian roots, and my older cousins tell me that cooking was always at the heart of every gathering. Food wasn’t just food — it was how everyone stayed connected.

One of the treasures I found in my big blue recipe book was a simple card titled Silver Cake. It’s a classic white cake, and the recipe sounded too good not to try. After making it, I can promise you it’s tender, fluffy, and truly better than any boxed mix I’ve ever used.

For the topping, you can go in so many directions — fresh fruit and whipped cream, your favorite frosting, or my mom’s homemade caramel icing, which is one of my childhood favorites and listed in the recipe menu. I hope you enjoy this cake as much as we do.
